This is the first in a series of books (six as of this writing) about Abel Jones, an officer in the Civil War. He becomes a Union investigator into activities that could have an outcome on the war, both militarily and politically. Without giving too much away, Jones discovers that not all is as it seems, and the good guys aren't always so good. The author, who served in the US Army, gives Jones a flowing voice that seems to imitate the type of language used in the 1860s. The book is exciting and unveils information about various characters, including Jones, as it progresses. There is considerable action and violence. It must be noted that given the time period in which this book is placed, much of the language is not politically correct. However, it does seem appropriate to the story and Jones (particularly as the series moves forward)grows through his prejudices. Also, while the books mostly stand on their own, Parry refers to characters and incidents from earlier novels frequently. This is the one to start with.Read full review
well written, designed to keep you locked in to the story line, reaches back through flashbacks to build the character but snaps you back to the main theme and mystery. The murder mystery interwoven with the civil war is extremely well done and doesn't change the historical facts to fit a narrative.
