this is quintessential meat puppets. the music and melodies are right on, but the vocals seem intended to throw everything out of balance. isn't grunge the antithesis of cool, the opposite of doing it right? on this disc they know they don't want to be ordinary, right down to the cover art which looks like (and probably was) the drawing of a five-year old. but even when they try not to be, they're so damn talented it's a pleasure to listen to. warning: the songs popularized by the nirvana unplugged album are, in their original form, much more raw (dare i say more grungy?).
I tend to stray towards the heavier side of music, but I also have roots in punk music as well (70'-80's) & the Meat Puppets fall in between. Meat Puppets II has to be there best body of work & I think captures the band at there peak. The feel of the album is just a band layed back & just having a mellow jam season on a lazy summer day, don't get me wrong there is energy through out, but it's a hey we are having a good day type vibe.
