As a homeschooling parent, I had read Gatto's "Dumbing us Down" years ago, but it didn't really resonate with me. A friend told me about his recent book, "Weapons of Mass Instruction", and that did resonate with me, but it also made me more curious about the references he made. I found that this book is available on his website for free, but I wanted a hardcopy to read. This book is truly his magnum opus--a life's work. I was blown away by the evidence he presents that the elite industrialists created compulsory government schooling beginning around 1850 in the US, for the express purpose of creating an obedient, compliant populace. Never had I dreamed from reading John Holt et al, that it was intentional! Gatto's argument that we were an egalitarian, fully literate society before this point, is still hard for me to swallow, but the absolute mountain range of evidence that he presents has me reeling. I feel as though I've got the next 30 years of reading laid out for me now tracking down some of his 2000 + sources. This book was a life changing experience for me.Read full review
Very informative book regarding what is taught and not taught in the public schools. If you as a parent want to ensure your child is receiving the best education possible this book will be an asset to you. Gatto reminded me that my children's education is not singularly up to the school. The system is not educating my children to compete in today's world in terms of math and sciences, writing, vocational training, logic or critical thinking. There is still much teaching I must do at home to give them a well-rounded education. What I can depend on the government's public school system to do for my children is to help them major in politcal agendas and social order, and minor in the above mentioned school subjects. Great documentation and statistics to back up his findings. You will want extra copies to pass on to friends and family.Read full review
This is a must read for any human, but especially parents. The state of our educations system fails children constantly but when you understand where it all started then it is no surprise. I highly recommend this book.
