This book is not a fictional attempt at comedy, as some might expect, no. It is much better than that. In this book, Gene Wilder talks about his life, high and low points, you know, the real "stuff" of life. He speaks with poignancy, tenderness, humor and charm. I realized several times, while I was listening to this unabridged audiobook, I would be smiling, and a few times I felt sadness. What came through was his honesty, in whatever area he was talking about. I have always liked Gene Wilder a great deal, but after experiencing his book, especially the audiobook because he is the reader, I found I felt a new and heightened level of respect for him. I think the book is excellent.
In Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, Gene Wilder who directed the movie, incorporated a phrase in the movie for Madeline Kahn to use, describing the female character "Jenny" as "simultaneously Sad And Funny At The Same Time". I believe he was secretly describing himself. Follow Gene Wilder's sad and joyous life from his childhood of getting beat up by other boys in a private school, to his wildly successful career, to the loss of his beloved Gilda, to ultimately find love with his now wife and a very brave battle with cancer. Poignant and uplifting. In the end you will feel a need to hug someone. Beautiful story I will listen to again and again.
very entertaining

This CD was a little slow moving. I thought it would be more excited then it really was. I also thought since Gene is hilarious that this would have more comedy involved. On the other hand it was a good insite into the live of Gene Wilder through his eyes.
Read with Gene's own voice, you really enjoy hearing about his life. You really get a sense of the man behind all the characters he played in film and on stage. I really enjoyed it very much! I'm a big fan of Gene's.
