Beautiful brass, compass works fine and sun dial need not be used. However, if you want to check your real sun time, use compass to find north, correct for local geographic north and open sundial arms. Shadow points at true time. If you are in middle of time zone, will be exact. Typically +/_ 30 minutes from west e d or east end of time zone to center. True north is at north pole but magnetic north us in far north central Canada. So Kansas to Indianna, no big deal, error 1 or 2 degrees. Wash. DC must add about 10 degrees for true north. Compass points a little to the left. Az is opposite. Check google for your area, deviation and variation. Before wire telegraph comms, the states and towns went by local sun time and used sun dial to set clocks. Railroads invented time zones to help schedules. Large sundials, correcy aligned by compass are very accurate to better than a minute. Also by checking difference between your standard time on a watch and sun time, the dif. in minutes tells how far east or west you are from the mid point of the time zone.
