I got this title in audiobook form, primarily because it is read by Richard Thomas of The Walton's (John Boy). Thomas is a gifted reader, especially of historical material, and his voice presentation is immaculate. As for the book itself, I found it to be fascinating! I have always admired Lincoln, especially his gift for oration, but this book opened my eyes to a whole other side of Lincoln that I had not explored previously...his political side. Goodwin does a wonderful job of weaving together a complex story of characters (Seward, Stanton, Chase, etc.). She illustrates how their different personalities were used by Lincoln to form a highly effective cabinet, during the most difficult time in our nation's history. An incredible book to listen to and, as a result of Thomas's reading, the hours just fly by!Read full review
One of the best in-depth histories of the Civil War I've ever had. Doris Kearns Goodwin dives deep into the personalities surrounding Lincoln such as I've never heard. Lincoln's political and human nature savvy as seen by his contemporaries does not disappoint I love this series and will buy it as gifts for friends.

This is one of the best books I have ever read or listed to. It gives you a better understanding of what a remarkable man President Lincoln was. We could use a man like Lincoln now.

It arrived after my car trip so I haven't listened to it yet. But she is an amazing historian and I have really enjoyed her other books so am really looking forward to listening to it.

Doris Kearns Goodwin shows how Lincoln was able to assemble a cabinet of his opponents to work together as a team to guide the Nation during one of the most devatating times in our history. There are always opponents to any war - the Civil War was no exception. Backfighting, jealousy, corruption, personal tragedy and the horrific loss of thousands of young lives made this possibly the most difficult of all Presidencies, but Lincoln was able to keep his "Team of Rivals" working towards the common good. Aremarkable man. A remarkable story.
