Gene's autobiography is heavily laced with explanations/descriptions of his self perceived mental instability and struggles with sex. There are some great anecdotes sprinkled throughout, but they all seem to circle back around to the same neurosis. It's like he is really suffering from OCD and can't stop obsessing over himself: certain character flaws, fears, and hungers. You get the feeling that Gene has never really known any real peace in his/this life. And sadly it appears as if he mistakenly sought it in things that ultimately fell short of giving it; not a surprise! I hope he finds that peace before his run on earth is over. Overall, I'd say worth the buck and a read. Just don't expect too much.
I never expected to feel a beginning to my life at the age of 48 but reading the eloquent and honest stories of the life of Gene(Jerome Silberman)Wilder awakened in myself the realization that I'm not alone and there is love after love. Thank you Mr. Wilder for sharing the intimate stories of your loves and life past and present. You have given me the heart to continue to love life and to realize that even after lost love their is hope and much more to come. If for nothing else your sharing the hope of defeating cancer and also to share the most wonderful poem After Awhile by Veronica Shoffstall was worth the reading of the book and also how wonderful to hear the audio CD of your reading this book. I recommend both very highly and as a must for anyone trying to start over after losing what they thought was their Life.Read full review
This is a wonderful book! I am a huge Gene Wilder fan, and I really thought I knew him well until I read this book. Turns out I knew very little about him! The detail in his stories is vivid enough to allow your mind's eye to compose the perfect picture of the events and people. I also like how the book has many short chapters with subsections to allow me to read a small bit in a limited time window.
It has quite a bit of sex information. I didn't care to know about all that. Once you get passed that book is OK.

A beautiful testament to the life of one of the world's most captivating comedic actors. Gene is extremely open and personal about the memories that contributed to his search for love and art. A terrific read. I wish it was 200 pages longer.
