Each season of Upstairs Downstairs is engrossing and entertaining. There hints of the history going on at the time, helping us to orient ourselves. There's believable character development, and great casting. We meet a few new characters each season, but the core cast remains, allowing us always to feel that we are always among friends. The second season has been especially entertaining. I hope we'll see more of Sara and Thomas.

Frankly I expected more, much more. Sadly something considered very good in it's day can lose a great deal as time goes by. A flawless production like Downton Abbey has the impact of making this appear very clumsy and unprofessional. I also felt the quality of the acting was nowhere near what we expect today - or perhaps the script and budget were sub standard. As I said, I am very disappointed.

We bought the 24 volume collection and donated it to the Toronto Library system for on demand viewing at the "reference branch". This earned us a thank you letter form the town mayor personally. As to the content, it is my considered opinion that Upstairs Downstairs is the very best programming material ever produced in the English language and has an immensity of edification potential for mankind in this respect. A look at people who possess faculties for the very best ways of thinking and being in the areas of courtesy, maintenance of idealism for the community generally and certainly in maintaining high standards for thinking through superior, in fact supreme levels of articulation prowess. If the British have been a beacon to mankind, a view held by many in this world, it is through the example I put it to you, of Upstairs Downstairs thinking. In this respect the British have well earned their place as purveyors of culture which has something to offer in the way of improvement with regards to rational engagement on facts while maintaining humane ideals uppermost. This in the end is perhaps the great appeal of the English language abroad as its use does challenge the user to engage with the values and idealism of its proponents often with an added richness and improvement of a local inflection of french passion perhaps or Germanic emphasis on the quality of output that would ultimately be the ruit of any prolonged discussion on any subject at hand. It is Britains contribution to the process and while there are others on the stage giving us a great deal equally, there never will in my own mind be adequate recognition or acknowledgement for what it has meant to the world to perfect the standards offered by and maintained by the Bellamy household from their perch in Britain going back some time to the now Edwardian era.Read full review
Upstairs Downstairs is perhaps one of the few mega-length series produced which becomes better with each passing season. With the development of each character having fallen in place, you witness Eaton Place not only at its most lavish, but also its most scandalous. Both downstairs parlor maid Sarah, and upstairs daughter Elizabeth are born before their respective times. Sarah wants to go on the stage and become more than a household servant. The baby Sarah concieves by the upstairs son James was the height of scandal for the era. Elizabeth's own marriage and subsequent pregnancy was perhaps even more scandalous at the time because her baby was not that of her husband's. There is no time in the whole series that you will see the Bellamy household in its fullest swing as the evening King Edward comes to dine at Eaton Place. In fact, the producers of Upstairs Downstairs went to great lengths of research making sure every detail of such an event was depicted as accurately as possible. You'll witness Mrs. Bridges running the kitchen so exhausted at times she is ready to drop, but the full scope of her talents never waivers and is carried off with perfection. Lady Marjorie is assisted in her boudoir by her lady's maid, Mrs.Roberts. At her ladyship's direction, Roberts helps in choosing which necklace is to be worn while they converse. Such conversation in so private a setting as a lady's boudoir sparks interest in itself. The camera slowly pans around Lady Marjorie, seated in front of her mirror at her dressing table as Roberts fastens an exquisite necklace around her slender neck and she is indeed breath-taking. Lady Marjorie, Richard, and the rest of their set upstairs are in their full element in entertaining the King of England. And somehow, the decorum of the evening has a most unusual collision with the scandals of the household, leading to a dramatic culmination you will only have to watch to find out what happens...Read full review
