By the Spring of 1969, the American troop level was at it's peak in Vietnam; at home, however, America's patience and will to fight the communists in southeast Asia had ebbed away. This important work illuminates how we did not learn from the French in the early part of the war, squandered our support at home during the Westmoreland period, and then found our way under Abrams after Tet 1968. ARVN forces with improved MACV support under Abrams fought "A Better War" until finally betrayed by the cut-off of funding by the U.S. Congress. Lewis Sorley, in meticulous detail, shows us how the war was won on the ground despite incredible micro-management from Washington. Ultimately, he shows how the North Vietnamese communists were able to prevail despite their own many blunders through a resolute will and unwavering support from Russia and China; in contrast, the ARVN forces were gradually weakened and demoralized by the American betrayal. There is a strong underlying message in this book. Several of the Congressmen from the Vietnam era still hold office today. They betrayed thier friends in Vietnam then and they would betray our friends in Iraq today. Are we doomed to repeat the errors of our past? Do we as a nation have the resolute will to defeat evil and stand by our friends in the future?Read full review
