Produced with the customary care and craftsmanship that the German publisher, Taschen, is known for bringing to their architectural publications, Case Study Houses is a delight. The book is huge and the photography by renowned architectural photographer, Julius Shulman, is a wonder to behold. The first edition dating from 2001 has become a primary source for students and devotees of mid-century modernism. As an added bonus, Taschen had photographer Shulman sign all 2,500 copies of the first edition. In the recent documentary about Shulman's life, Visual Acoustics, he is shown hand signing the title page of each book prior to binding. The volume also contains many fine reproductions of original presentation drawings and construction documents by the likes of Richard Neutra and Charles Eames. The book's large format brings detailed elements of these fine drawings into sharp focus. A resounding success in architectural circles, Case Study Houses was republished later in the decade as part of Taschen's 25th anniversary, but purists will want to own a first edition bearing Shulman's original signature. This book is an instant classic, indespensible to anyone with an interest in Twentieth Century modern dwellings.Read full review
