The 1904-S Half Dollar is one of the stars of the Barber Half Dollar series. It has one of the smallest populations of certified Mint State coins. On the other hand, it has a very large population of circulated coins, primarily because it is such a rare and in-demand date. Mint State examples appear most frequently in MS64 and, above that, the populations drop off dramatically. On the positive side, there are a couple of exceptional, superb examples, including the Price-Hugon PCGS MS67 that was purchased directly from the San Francisco Mint in the year of issue. Another fabulous example is the Norweb-Shireman PCGS MS67. The third PCGS MS67 is a colorful example formerly of the James A. Stack and Dr. Duckor Collections.
The 1904-s is the 6th lowest mintage of all Barber Halves and suffers from a weak reverse that makes even a full good hard to find and a Very Good and Fine are a real effort to add to a set. Barber halves are affordable and a set that can be completed in good and very good for a reasonable price and you will as a side being investing in the silver content of the coins. If you try to find a nice Good Or VG at a coin show or on E-Bay you will see a decent obverse and a reverse without a full rim and hardly any shield details. I see some price guides including the Grey Sheet are raising prices in Good to VF to higher levels as it should be as the date is very under rated. Find one with a full rim reverse you should buy it.
