Rita Hayworth plays a wealthy socialite, jealous of the younger woman (Kim Novak) in Joey's (Frank Sinatra's) life, in this Academy Award' nominated classic. She is willing to financially-back the youthful, handsome wanna-be nightclub owner (Sinatra), but upon discovering he's also interested in one of their potential show-girls/transposed strip-tease starlets, the woman turns against Joey and financially backs-out from funding, so he's forced to scrap all plans to open the nightclub on Opening Night. (Hayworth plays a typical ruthless, uppity, high-class lady, and Sinatra plays a typical playboy: a man on the prowl for whatever he can find: sex, as well as all the booze a man can hope for, in the Big Time. Who cares who gets in the way of his hopeful success? Certainly NOT Joey! He has HUGE dreams!) Nearing the picture's end there is a very well done "fantasy scene" where Joey envisions what he might have became, had Hayworth stuck to her end of their bargain on opening night. In the end, the viewer might suspect that she's made a mistake in refusing to back the project. Just as she discusses her love and desire to marry the younger suitor, she's in for a huge let-down, and Joey tells her where to "go jump," before walking away with the more youthful starlet on his arm, leaving the elderly socialite (Hayworth) alone... and leaving the viewer's imagination to wander, the "what ifs?" Will Joey ever regret making his choice? There may have been a part TWO of the drama, yet it wasn't meant to be, leaving the viewer, hanging... Not the best Hayworth' picture, but certainly not the worst, either, and I'm a HUGE fan.Read full review
This movie has some wonderful scenery from the early 1950's. This is a story about an entertainer who goes from job to job, from city to city, and the police would rather he not be in their town. At the beginning of the movie, he is thrown out of one town, and gets a one way ticket by train to somewhere else. He then takes a ferry to San Francisco, where he by luck gets a job in a night club. He ends up catching the interest of a wealth woman, and a pretty entertainer. He has to make a choice which woman to settle down with, and in the end, he make a choice. The ending leaves a smile on your face! I would recommend this movie. JT
