Written in 1925 by Will James, this book is winner of a Newberry Award for excellence in children's books. I purchased it because of my interest in Will James. Will James was born in 1892 and writes about his life as a cowboy in Montana. The book is about his favorite horse, Smoky, and does not read like a children's book at all. It is written as a cowboy talks and gives you some real insight into a lifestyle that is long gone but a love for animals and life on the range that lives within all. After reading it you will know why it was given the Newberry Award.
