Now, Guiles is a first rate biographer. His "Norma Jean" about Marilyn Monroe years ago was also very good. This is an even handed representation of Joan Crawford. There are a few tidbits he missed, due to the flux and flow of the internet's deep reach for researchers of all kinds, but this is the type of biography one can lean on for an overall understanding of the subject. Biography is a flawed art, but Guiles straddles the problems posed by MOMMIE DEAREST with deft aplomb.
