Ok. I'm an educator, and John is a little one- sided on the whole union involvement in education problem; and his point of view on charter schools almost made him " dead to me ". I personally know that many charter schools " cherry pick " high GPA students, and will often " axe " a very capable teacher in their annual end of year interview if they don't like some subjective aspect of their personality, etc. That said, many of the other sections of the book I heartily agreed with, especially the commentary on the " sky is falling " panic inducing reporting of our childish and 83 % liberal media. Now they are definitely " dead to me ".
A great book by John Stossel, talks about the unbelievable levels of stupidity occurring in the name of profit and public service; most of which have disastrous effects and some of which are destined for failure. Lists trends that are destructive and almost unstoppable and the only way they will end is for some people to sacrifice their career, a task most won’t even consider. Covers how the profession of law has become nothing more than a bullying tool used by few people to the detriment of “the many.” Tells how most businesses that aren’t profitable should be allowed to fail instead of being given government hand-out after government hand-out. Shows that in most cases the private sector can do a job better, cheaper and faster while saving money to the consumer/tax-payer. Finally, tells how the questionable scientists use pseudo-science to promote a political agenda that only guarantees them more funding for research and doesn’t make life any better. All in all, a real eye-opener. Even I was amazed at how most lawsuits appear to be nothing more than a devious scheme to acquire wealth. And finally, if you like “Give Me A Break”, you’ll like this follow-up.Read full review
I enjoyed some of John Stossel's 20/20 segments, so I thought I would try reading his book. It has been wonderful... Even after the first chapter I was hooked! I am an engineer, so I am familiar with some of the topics he discusses, and his arguments make complete sense. His section on "Irradiated Food" actually being good for us, was superb! I have become pretty skeptical of the media in recent years, and he completely backs up my intuition, and goes much further!
I'd seen him on T.V. talking about this book and was very interested in it. It's a good, fun and easy read. It's amazing how much stuff we believe just because someone says it's so. He takes some of the lies we've been told and tells the truth about them. More than once a topic has come up and we'd go to the book to see if the media is giving us the truth or not. I guess we're lazy most of the time when it comes to researching topic we've been told for years are truth. He has evidence to back up what he puts in print and it all makes good sense. I'd highly recommend this to help bring back into balance some of the myths that are floating around out there.
John Stossel is excellent on showing how things really work. There are so many "truths" that we accept without even thinking about them. What are the "truths" about global warming, teacher pay, gender differences? John Stossel uses facts to promote his arguments instead of scare mongering and emotions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their vision of the world!
