Oh man, Cool World... On the one hand, I love this movie, and on the other hand, it's really not that good. Can you enjoy something and hate it at the same time? Cool World makes a good argument for the possibility of this paradox. I had to buy this movie after reading Jared Von Hindman's review of it, in which he summarized the plot in scathingly honest terms. The review makes it clear that this is a bad movie (most of the ones he deigns to talk about are), and also made me desperately need to see it right away. The only phrase which appropriately describes it is "inspired lunacy". If you're just looking for a good story with a sensible plot and good character-development, you're in the wrong place. On the other hand, if you're like me in being able to read a lot of big ideas into the subtext of a film whose creator may or may not have been thinking that far ahead, then you'll understand why this piece speaks to my heart. It's got ridiculous cartoon slapstick, painfully bad lines, and no real internal logic - but what it does have is hauntingly beautiful (in an M.C. Escher meets Hieronymous Bosch way) painted backgrounds, lots of crazy cartoon characters that demand to have fanfic written about them, and of course the lusciously lascivious Holli Would. If you're averse to sexually powerful women, you might disapprove of her, but the rest of us know what you're missing out on and are very sad for you. Where someone else might just see Ralph Bakshi having a wet dream on VHS, I see a spectacular concept sadly squandered, but more than worth exploring for those with enough imagination to see three excellent movies hidden behind and between this crappy one. The more cringeworthy cartoon moments give the flick a 1.5, but the moments of feverish brilliance are worth a 4.5, so a 3 seems like a fair compromise. This testament to deranged excellence more than compensates for its own failings; I recommend this film to anyone with a penchant for explosive creativity and the patience to ignore the more lowbrow moments that plague it.Read full review
I decided to buy this movie for my brother. He loves this movie and wanted it, so I bought it for him. He let me borrow it to watch it and I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny. There is just something about "noids" in movies with "doodles" that is just great!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE 1. BRAD PITT, 2. KIM BASSINGER, AND 3. THIS IS AN ALL TIME CLASSIC MOVIE. A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR VIDEO LABRARY
