I decided to buy this little gem when I was cold, wet, miserable, and needed something to take me away from my environment. What a treasure I fell into! The plot line is centered around a young woman who, disappointed by love and suffering from heartbreak, leaves her home to start a new life in another town on the island of Sicily during the first 1/2 of the 1900's. There she becomes resigned to growing old and never experiencing love. But a twist of fate puts her squarely in the path of passion and danger. Her one solace during her lifetime has been food, and what a wonderful cook she is! I buy tomato paste at the local super market and the heroine give a recipe for STRATTU - the most amazing tomato paste I've ever tasted - so I don't think I'll be buying bland tomato paste again. The contents are more than a little sensual so adults should review carefully before allowing their children to read it, but overall the style of writing is excellent - you can't wait to read the next page, nevermind the next chapter, and you are satisfied at the end. In more ways than one. People reading this should have an open mind, a love of good food, a lack of embarrassment, and romance/passion in their hearts. Deborah DegenhartRead full review
I love how Lily Prior mixes reality and fantasy with the use of creative language and vivid word pictures. This novel had recipes mixed in with romance and drama and made me feel like I could picture and taste the story. Her characters are always colorful and interesting and she touches on the gritty human emotions and the magic of life in a way that kept me reading.
