I purchased this doll for my niece who has become a civil war enthusiast recently after visiting Gettysburg. While this Barbie is certainly not historically correct, I think items like this provide a bridge for bringing history to children that they can see and touch, enhancing the often boring history books!

I bought this on impulse as I've been watching "Mercy Street". I don't know how accurate the dress is to the period as it has leg o' mutton sleeves and a high collar band so it looks much later. But who can resist blue and white striped cotton! The apron is white searsucker with a red caduceus on the chest and poor thing has no underwear or petticoat AT ALL, so Mattel gets an F for that. The doll has the pink TNT body, the head sculpt is the Mackie face with teeth showing, and the hair is sprayed stiff blonde but done up in a kind of chignon in the back. The shoes are cheap white plastic flats, a nurse's cape and medical kit are included. I think there's a little story book that goes with it (I don't have it handy) as this series was meant to be "educational". So it's a nice pink box doll actually meant for children.Read full review
