Based on I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Omega Man is about a man fighting to survive against a race of mutant humans. In the book they are vampire-like, in the movie they are a bit zombie and a lot religious fanatic. The basic story is great - read the novella if you enjoy horror fiction, it is a true classic - but the execution is dated and badly acted. The special effects are horrible, not just for their day since other films had had more realistic make-up and blood way before this movie came out. I am not a fan of Charlton Heston - I really think the man could not act his way out of a paper bag - and I am sure he has done decent work on other roles, probably just one and built a career out of that one performance. In this movie he is stiff and condescending, and half the movie he is without a shirt - PUT ON A SHIRT MR HESTON! It's like watching Will Ferrel w/o a shirt - yikes! The stereotypes run rampant, there is a Foxy Brown wannabe and an Easy Rider reject. Watch it on a Saturday afternoon when there is nothing else on but I really recommend the book, it is terrifying!Read full review
In this 1970's thriller Charlton Heston literally is the last man on Earth. When germ warfare breaks out he is one of the scientists working on a cure. His helicopter crashes and at the last second he injects himself with an untried test antedote. He lives, he is the only one alive in L.A., and maybe the entire world. He sets himself up in a secure building. He installs armorment, guns, generators, and food. He is the last living human, but there are others. Mutants who didn't die, but are no longer totally human. They can only move around in the dark, and can't tolerate daylight. He can move anywhere in the daytime, but they all come out at night, so he must hide. Heston is trying to inject them with his blood trying to see if this might work. The problem is that they may start to change back but all of a sudden turn on you. Suddenly Heston finds another person. He is very happy to know that there may be more. She tells him of a colony of survivors and they plan to meet them. He draws a liter of his blood to be used as a base for a cure, but they catch him before he can get away. His blood is able to be used to create the cure, to bring man back from the brink. This was a good movie.Read full review
