I first heard this album in early 1990 shortly after it was released, and as soon as I heard the opening track, Street fighting Years, I was instantly hooked. The orchestration, the melodies, the sheer brilliance of the musicians at work, shone through the entire album. This was in fact the first album I had heard from Simple Minds, and it set the ball rolling from that day on to hear all their other work. I can still vividly remember listening to this album the first time; such was its impact on me. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I’ve listened to this album ever since that day, and have actually worn out a few copies of it. It still gives me Goosebumps when I hear it, and I find it inspirational, and relaxing at the same time. It is by far the bands greatest work. All their albums prior to this one, are fantastic, and there’s clearly a change in direction over the years from the art house punk of “life in a day” through to the big beat rock of “Once upon a time” but the change to a more soulful, softer rock style in this album really sets it apart. It’s a highly political album, dealing with apartheid, for the most part but don’t let that put you off. If you’ve never heard this album before, please do. You won’t be disappointed. It truly is a classic album that many people still have yet to discover. Jim Kerr’s voice really comes alive on this album, and the track, “Kick it in” has to be one of the best on the album. Although, clearly I’m a little biased, I love all the tracks here, but several stand out for mention. The opening and title track is simply awesome. It’s followed by the stunning “Soul Crying Out”, that track alone is worth buying the album for. “this is your land” in collaboration with Lou Reed is majestic as it rises and falls, and then you’ve got “Kick It In” which is a hark back to the bands rock roots, and is a fantastic track, which propels you with McNeils keyboards and Gaynors drums to a crescendo that highlights this track above the others. “Belfast Child” the bands only UK no 1 is included on this album, and is not hard to see why this track made it to the top of the charts. If you enjoy listening to music by musicians at the top of their game, completing their best work, then you will not be disappointed. If I’ve managed to persuade you to purchase a copy of this album, then congratulations, you’ve just bought an album that you’re likely to listen to and enjoy for years to come. If not, borrow a copy if you can and see what you’re missing out on.Read full review
Quite simply brilliant. Haven't heard this album for many years as I had it on vinyl (and no record player anymore!) but it still sounds as fresh as it did in 1989. Not one duff song, and so many stand out ones, Belfast Child and Let It all Come Down just about the top the list but really, this is a class album. Never bettered by Simple Minds, or come to that many other bands. Picked it up for £1, so an absolute steel. 10/10
