Most tours are not memorable enough to merit a live recording by an artist. George Harrison's "Live in Japan," however, is an example of why a few select live albums are not only necessary, but a gift that gets richer as the years pass. Aside from being the only complete live concert album of Harrison's post-Beatles solo career (the only other concert album credited to him is 1971's "Concert For Bangladesh" which was really more of a charity compilation), "Live In Japan" captures the last fully realized tour that Harrison ever mounted. Coaxed onto the road by friend Eric Clapton following the final Traveling Wilbury's album, this 1991 concert captures Harrison mixing his classic compositions with the Beatles ("Something," "Taxman," "Piggies," "Here Comes the Sun")with hit solo works ranging from "My Sweet Lord," to "Got My Mind Set On You." It was this tour that, in part, got Harrison writing music again and led to his final album, 2002's "Brainwashed." Strangely, "Live in Japan" was never a chart-topper and has never been fully embraced by Beatles or Harrison fans (which is a bit of a mystery). But don't deny yourself any longer. I probably enjoy this more due to my love for the Beatles and hearing it after Harrison's demise, makes me appreciate his melodic guitar even more. No fancy pyrotechnics here: that was not his style. He always had a melodic and lyrical style to his lead work. I never thought he had that great a singing voice, a little thin for my tastes, but no one sounds right singing his songs. I suppose it's like Neil Young's voice--not great, but only Neil sounds right singing his songs. Harrison's certainly a forgiving sort-of-guy. Clapton steals his lady, but George still asks him to play that wonderful, sad guitar on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." This 2-disc set includes a live version of that very song, and Clapton's there to recreate the magic. The rest of the show though is all Harrison.Read full review
