I bought this product mainly to replace the older set that I had (the one with the original Cylon head packaging as some of the disk centers were cracked and would not load in some of my DVD players and Universal refused to replace the disk (the cracks were due to the flimsy disks and the dvd hub in the case) I always enjoyed this show and was happy that that when it was finally released on DVD almost a decade ago (2004) the episodes were remastered in 5.1 audio which is appropriate for those battle scenes. The other reason was of course, to watch the original pilot in its original broadcast 3 hour form (actual run time is 2 hrs. 19 minutes) as well as the special 2 hour version of "Greetings From Earth" Both of which were re-edited into multiple part version for syndication and thus scenes and dialogue were cut or re-sequenced. I would still like to see the 12 telefilms released as they were in the UK and perhaps for Universal to release this set in a single 6 - 8 disk set as they did for Buck Rogers as dual sided disks don't do well over long periods of time. The extras: Deleted scenes(most are outtakes or contain poor footage, or are scenes that were included in the for-mentioned telefilm versions. There is a special remembering BSG special that is about the length of a single episode, as well as bloopers. Most of the regular episodes include the opening teaser preview, except the pilot, Lost Planet of the Gods Part 1 and Living Legend Part 2. (Lost Planet of the Gods does include a part 1 recap prior to the opening credits) Maybe if a Blu Ray version comes out they will include the ABC promos as Paramount included the network promos for Star Trek series. The set also includes a smaller version of the book/episode guide that came with the original release and includes broadcast dates and an expanded cast list.Read full review
NOT complete :( NOT complete :( But Awesome To Have & See. A+++++++++++ just finished watching it, loved every single episode of it, especially now in the THX REMASTERED version, old series & movies being THX remastered is very cool in my opinion, it's sorta like seeing a new film or series. Especially in beginning it's funny when you see them hover in space & you actually see the wires where they are strapped in & all. It's sadly also not completely in chronological order :( you see in the beginning baltar crushed and pinned down ( though alive ) inside a pyramid chamber and vowing to get Lucifer ( his first assistant in that episode ) ( episode ends as if he's gonna die there or make a miraculous escape, yet that doesn't happen ) then there comes a episode where baltar is being sentenced to death as the imperious leader tells him that he has served his purpose & since all humans should be eradicated he is to be terminated. then it hits off where they do the travelling & all. cool episodes each & every one of them, but what i personally liked best of the series is when they were actually on earth with the motorbikes who could also fly, with there spaceships that could become invisible, where the children could jump real high due to lower gravity, where the children were in the council, and all of these episodes are unfortunately not included here. i distinctly remember a episode where a cylon & a almost look-alike human android crash-land on earth when it's carnival or halloween and they try to broadcast a signal to the cylon empire yet then the cylon malfunctions and jumps off a roof and they end up in a garbage truck and are then crushed to pieces. those episodes i loved best. I DO hope that in future those will be released as well with a epic season 2 or something. definately recommendable, but don't think that these are all episodes, there are lots more, and in the book that's describes the episodes it says that the show got cancelled, but i'm sure it didn't, perhaps for a while i don't know, but i do know that there are MANY more episodes. great to have. alot of the present battlestar galactica series are based on the episodes of these old ones, though remade, it's not like with some old movies that are remade that it's exactly the same but then with different actors & all, the plot has been rewritten & all, though you can clearly see that it got based on that episode though. very great to have, a true classic SF series, can't wait for the other episodes!!!Read full review
Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Epic Series. A must have for any fan of the Battlestar Galactica TV series from the late 70's. Fans of the new Sci-Fi Channel series will also be interested in seeing how it all began. Dirk Benedict's Starbuck is the highlight of the series, the Han Solo if you will of the show. Not to mention a young Jane Seymour and Anne Lockhart. The only flaw with this DVD release is the exclusion of the Galactica 1980 series that followed after Galactica's cancellation. True, Galactica 1980 was no where near as good as the original, but there was an episode featuring Starbuck where we get to find out his fate. If this had been included, the DVD set would have been rated excellent instead of Good.
I actually borrowed this series from the library and was reminded of how much I enjoyed it as a kid! Now, as an adult, I do admit there is definitely a cheese factor involved here, but as a fan of the new Battlestar Galactica series, I find it fun to compare the new series with this one and see how they have taken a few plot cues and embellished on them with such fascinating and original twists! (Example: Lloyd Bridges played the original Cain - it's quite interesting what BSG has done with THAT character in the new series! Psycho woman!) This original series is much more family friendly than the new, and the special effects are really impressive, knowing that the series was produced in an era when computers were the size of minivans! The series is better than I remember, but don't expect the depth of character, or military "accuracy" that have been achieved in the new series. The "epic" is purely fun, fun, fun. And Richard Hatch (Apollo) and Dirk Benedict (Starbuck) are not painful to look at, either. And that's no felgercarb!Read full review
