Bill Bryson writes funny stuff! I think even if you are not a bb(baby boomer) you will crack up reading his "memoir"! I will never look at an empty recycled glass jar the same again! You gotta read it to find out why--too funny. I have never been to DesMoines IOWA but I feel like I really know how it was in the mid 20th century. BB really loved his dad you can tell too. Yes Mr. B senior did sound like the biggest cheapskate but he did grow up during a worldwide Depression plus Iowans are known for making their currency stretchLOL! BB's dad truly was an excellent baseball sportswriter so a chip off the old block is Bill I think! BB was not an A+ student by any means which goes to show you that everybody has a gift and Billy Bryson has the gift of telling you some hard truths and also making you laugh/snort too. Happy Reading The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt kid--A Memoir of a Boomer~midneRead full review

My new boyfriend effusively urged me to read this. He was so enthusiastic I picked it up with a cautionary attitude; so, new boyfriend - will he be able to handle it if I think Billy Bryson's memoir based story is a dud? To my delight, very few books have ever caused me to burst out laughing more times that I could count. Accurately captures the feelings of America's mid-century culture and Bryson's boyhood changes with hilarious hyperbole. I will look for more of his books to put on my shelf.

Bill Bryson is a truly gifted story teller and writer. He's very funny and at the same time accurate in his descriptions of life. In my opinion, one of the most interesting and entertaining authors of our time.

For someone such as myself who has always been fascinated by the 50's and the appearant mystique regarding that era , Mr Bryson did nothing to dispell the myth of how great those times must have been . His descriptions are flawless and humorous , while also touching on the not so humorous issues of the time including nuclear testing , and the destruction of innocence associated with progress and growth . Steven Katz, one of the characters in this and other Bryson works, needs his own book . The one bad thing about this book was....... there was just not enough pages . I wanted it to go on and on .
