This beautifully written and illustrated book shows how the magic of author Cressida Cowell's original story "How to Train Your Dragon" was adapted and brought to the big screen. The care invested in every aspect of the endeavor is clearly apparent. The artwork, which was translated into stunning animation, is superlative. The reader walks through steps and stages the artists conceived to create the final versions for the human and dragon characters, the clothing, the homes and work spaces, and the natural environment. The considerations for color values, lighting, and positioning are explored. The book itself is a top quality publication. I intend to do everything possible to protect and preserve the excellent condition in which I received my copy. Along with the "art of" books for the two subsequent "How to Train Your Dragon' films, this volume is a treasured addition to my library.Read full review

I am an artist and I use that as an excuse to enjoy cartoons. "I'm studying the art." Yeah, right. As long as people keep believing it. Actually I've been accused of BEING a cartoon. "How to Train your Dragon" is a beautiful cartoon with a fantastic story line, incredible art, endearing characters and breath taking scenery. Toothless is cute and has a great personality and becomes a great friend to Hiccup. The movie was so memorable that I couldn't get enough of it and bought everything I could about it. I was excited to see that there was a book of the art of the movie. When I bought the book I was not at all dissapointed. It is an interesting read with fabulous art not only from the story but also art showing the development of the characters and story. It is a beautiful wonderful book, a great reference and very inspirational. I recommend it to everyone, especially anyone who loves cartoons, art,and dragons. I highly recommend this book. I love it and I am so glad I bought it.Read full review
I dearly love the How to Train Your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell and I was hyped to see the movie they were based on, but looking at what I could've been given here is more than a little upsetting. They've had so much beautiful lovely concept art keeping truer to what was given on page, keeping Hiccup and Fishlegs unaltered at the young age they're meant to be (Even including Hiccup's Grandfather 'Old Wrinkly') so I can't help but wonder 'looking at the end result' what went wrong during production. Do buy and read this book! It contains needed back-story info on the film, giving book readers a 'What-if' taste of how they're books would've and could've looked put on the big-screen.
