Stephen Ambrose has been my favorite author concerning anything about WWII. I read this book when it was first published and have purchased it again to add to my collection of First Edition books written by him. The depth of research with the first hand accounts of the survivors of perhaps the greatest day in history makes this a fascinating read for anyone interested in history and wants to know more than what was in the history books we had in school. I have an interest in history of the WWII period and there is one author for me to read about this time period, Stephen Ambrose. I have read that some of his books contain mistakes. Does it surprise anyone? With the different prospective seen from everyone involved in any one battle in WWII I think that it is to be expected and, to me, of little consequence. The fact that these heroic men and their equally heroic deeds are forever remembered more than makes up for the occasional error. The bravery and sacrifices of these young men, what they endured for the cause of Liberty should never be forgotten. These books by Stephen Ambrose ensure that they will not be. There is no greater honor a man can have than to be remembered as a Liberator for a conquered country, to have given back to a nation their freedom. My deepest regret is that I never had the chance to be a part of something like this. Just try to imagine yourself in these stories, what these men did is truly awe inspiring. I think that is what makes this book great is that what comes across is that these men did not think of themselves as hero only as men doing what needed to be done to eliminate this threat to world peace, doing their job.Read full review
This is a replacement book I bought. The original (same book, publication year, etc. had water damage, so I looked for and found the current one. The book I bought on ebay is in very good used condition - exactly as advertised - so I am 'happy'.

This book is a must have for anyone who believes June 6, 1944 is more than just a moment in history. I have been an admirer of Stephen Ambrose for some time now, The way he is able to incorporate the real soldiers accounts into the hard facts and numbers is amazing. If you like World War 2, this book is a must have. The story of D Day must be told, and who better to tell it than the man who founded the National D Day Museum. A++ right up there with the classics such as A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, and Band Of Brothers.
its a good story
