Anyone seeking a good compilation of Marc Bolan/T.Rex's hits should be delighted with this selection of 24 tracks on a single CD. Completists will probably want to go for one of the 5 CD box sets. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality for a 25th Anniversary remastered edition. Hiss has been largely eliminated as one might expect with modern filtering techniques, however, separation could have been a lot better. I'm sure the songs weren't recorded on a 4-track. Now Tony Visconti T. Rex's producer liked a lot of fuzzy guitars - a defining sound of glam rock - but on this remaster Marc's voice is barely distinguishable on some tracks resulting in a 'muddy' mid range. Convinced that Marc's voice was clearer on the originals I got out my old 45's. Of the three I have left only Hot Love seems to have been given respectful treatment. Ride A White Swan and Telegram Sam don't come close to the originals even allowing for the snaps and crackles of well played 45s. Perhaps the sound engineer gave this project to an apprentice who'd never heard Marc Bolan or T. Rex before? Some versions of the 25th Anniversary edition have a bonus DVD. This contains clips from the Marc Show broadcast apparently in the 70s on sets that look like they were later re-used for Teletubbies. These are very 'stagey' affairs with a curiousity value. I think much more could have been done by Universal in showing respect to Marc/T.Rex by compiling some of his electrifying live performances.Read full review
