I have read several books by Robert McNamara, I saw the "Fog of War" (2003) and "The Path to War" (2002)and became very interested in him. This book was engrossing with its candid and personal interviews and in depth research. The author put the dates of the newly declassified material up against the dates of public remarks and occurrences to reveal a two sided McNamara. The writer actually caught McNamara in a few lies and deceptions, that I found most interesting. His hawk into dove transformation and breakdown are covered in great detail. The lives of several people affected directly or indirectly by McNamara's decisions are examined and provide a significant way of reminding the reader of the ripple effect that seems to be true of life's consequences. There is the Artist that tried to kill McNamara, The Army Nurse, The Soldier, The Quaker who set himself on fire and the US Sympathizer in South Vietnam that got left behind. Their lives, pain and healing provide another lens through which to view McNamara and his career. The book is well researched and well written. I recommend it to anyone who wants to put McNamara and Vietnam in perspective. Also watch the "Fog of War" to see McNamara's version of himself.Read full review
