I watched this when it was on TV and loved it. Once it was released on DVD, I picked it up, thinking that maybe it would seem a little corny or outdated. Boy was I wrong! This is still great stuff. Alf was the King of wisecracks and had such a wonderful take on situations. The show also did a great job of using Pop culture in their material. They often referenced other top rated shows and even incorporated them into episodes (such as the time Alf was on Jeopardy, or The Late Show, but with ed McMahon, as Alf had replaced Johnny carson). If you follow the Simpson's, you will see that they definetely "borrowed" some of Alf's material. This shouldn't be a big surprise, though, as Al Jean, who was a more prominent writers on The Simpsons also wrote several episodes of Alf. I am sure if you watch a few episodes, you will be hooked on this comedy and you might even find yourself saying "Ha! I kill me!"Read full review
The best part about this set is that Alf talks on each of the menu screens, and he is hilarious! I love Alf, and I love these episodes. There are only two drawbacks, and they may seem contradictory. The first is that the episodes are very short, less than a half hour long each. This means you can watch several episodes at a time, and practically watch the entire set in one night. This is very disappointing for me. The second drawback stems right from the first. Alf is hilarious until you've watched about 4 or 5 episodes. Then, you stop appreciating his humor. My recommendation: watch Alf in small doses to maintain maximum appreciation. Since both of these drawbacks seem more personal than product related, I'm giving Alf season 1 a rating of Excellent. Enjoy!
I always loved ALF and my daughter also. We would watch the show together and even though some of this is out of date...it's still hilarious. I love Alf's dry sense of humor. It's just wonderful to be able to see a show like this again and share with my grandchildren...something that isn't violent with sexual innuendos. This is just a fun time and enjoyable. The children laughed at some of Alf's antics. Even my 20 yr old grandson proclaimed when he saw that I bought it for my daughter for christmas, "NO WAY..ALF...I LOVE HIM! WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS?" They all sat down and watched it reminiscing. Just a fun item to enjoy with the children. Time to bring back all good, positive times from the past.
ALF stands for "alien life form," and it becomes the adopted moniker of Gordon Shumway, the last known survivor of the planet Melmac; Gordon crashes his spacecraft into the garage of the Tanner family's suburban home, and is subsequently adopted by them. They must keep him out of the hands of the authorities, however, which means no one can ever know about the alien who lives with the Tanners, giving rise to many hilarious adventures.
The first season so far is very funny. Iβve only watched like half of the first disc, and Alf is very funny! Itβs a must watch, and itβs worth the cabbage to own. I definitely look forward to buying the other three seasons in the future.
