This book covers the fascinating rise and fall of the Comanche nation in the 1700s and 1800s. In place of the usual eurocentric approach of portraying natives as forced to adjust by colonial empires, it covers the growth of a native empire that constantly forced its own terms on Spain. It is a detailed academic work, but the writing is fluid, the details are colorful, and the subject matter was little-known and gripping. I certainly learned a lot and enjoyed the process. It is an excellent book.

The most in depth and well researched work I have seen on a tribe that controlled a vast amount of territory with relatively few people, and of warriors fierce enough to drive out the Apache from their occupied lands.
