"Oh well, nothing lasts forever...." said a mysterious voice. "Hellfire does," said Sebastian Shaw, the Black King of the new Inner Circle. -Astonishing X-Men #12 (Dangerous, volume 2) The Hellfire Club is back in full glory! The new Inner Circle consists of characters from Emma Frost's dark past--Sebastian Shaw, Cassandra Nova, Ellie Phimister, Emma Frost, and a mysterious cloaked figure called Perfection. Why are they here and what do they want with the X-Men? Meanwhile, the X-Man destined to destroy the Breakworld is finally revealed, while Ord (along with a 'friend') set off to destroy that one X-Man! Astonishing X-Men: Torn Volume 3 (Collects Astonishing X-Men issues #13-#18) contains action, twists, complications, humor, a little romance, and suspense throughout every issue, which is exactly what you need in a comic book. As Joss Whedon stated, this arc focuses on the psychological aspect of the characters. And I'm going to say, he does a damn well job of doing so. I'm still so amazed by the cleverness of Whedon's writing with these characters. At first, I was uneasy about the jaw dropping twist, until I read the conclusion to this story arc and it made sense to me. It does not, however, leave with the satisfaction of completeness to the story. What exactly happened to Cyclops? Where did Cassandra Nova go? Will Kitty forgive Emma? What is Breakworld...really? And lastly but not least, who is not making it back from the Breakworld?!?! These questions, however, are to be concluded in the next arc, Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable. We have like what? 6 issues to go? I'm all hyped for it and can't wait! As for the art, I've always loved Cassaday's and Martin's work on Astonishing X-Men. Cassaday does a great job of portraying the emotions of these in-depth, depressed characters and Martin continues to make the coloring clean and crisp. True believers, get ready for Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable! Due to Whedon and Cassaday's astonishing work from the previous 3 books, I have a lot of confidence this next arc will be even better!
