Wilkie Collins virtually invented the modern mystery-thriller in the mid-19th century with this book and the somewhat more famous "The Moonstone". These novels led to Conan-Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. While this book is too long ,in view of 20th century editing, it is still worth reading by any devotee of mystery and suspense. I read it after watching the BBC adaptation, which edits certain events in a more modern way, such as (spoiler follows) -- the death of the count,-- but keeps the major plot lines intact. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

Great novel by the first mystery writer in Britain. Read "The Moonstone" too, a classic.

I decided to read this book because of Andrew Lloyd Weber's recent musical of the same name. I wanted to know the story prior to listening to the musical. After reading this book, and not being able to put it down, I was left with the thought, "Weber had better have done this book justice in his show!" This book beats Jane Austen...well-written - a 150-year old page turner! Definitely one of my favorite books.
Bought it as last month's bookclub read. Written in the old style and takes forever to read but I truly liked the book
