Vaughn Bode, a major founder and influence in underground comics in the 70s shows his brilliant creativity and artwork in Volume 2 of Fantagraphics Books reprint of the popular Cheech Wizard cartoons published originally in National Lampoon magazine. There are those who would feel no more regretful removing Bode's work from underground literature than they would taking a bad apple out of a barrel of good ones. Loaded with explicit sexual references, depicting a charlatan wizard who's primary goal in life is gratifying his urge for sex, drugs, beer, and conning all those he meets out of all they have, there are many reasons to avoid this work. Yet, Bode's Cheech Wizard still stands today as the pinnacle of underground comics. Labeled as potty or sick humor by some, Cheech Wizard is not for the squeamish or prudish. However, for those willing to take a dip into the raunchy world of drug ridden 70s comic satire, it's a riot of colorful images and creative output rivaling R.Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, and others whose work was likely influenced by Bode. If you like 70s underground, and the recently mentioned authors, if you are a fan of the Freak Brothers, Mr. Natural, and want to "Keep on Truckin'" you can hardly do better than Cheech Wizard. In my not so humble opinion, hysterically funny, creative humor that will stick with you for years.Read full review
