Simon Schama's A History of Britain is a superb series of documentaries which trace British history from the Stone Age through the twentieth century. Narrated/hosted by Schama and based on his very large texts on the subject, these documentaries present Britain's history as exciting, personal, and frequently volatile. Each episode is fascinating and focusses on a specific time period or historical persons. There are five DVDs (six if you buy the British-Region 2 version) with about 15 hours of material in this set. Whether you're a history buff, a student, or just someone interested in knowing more about British history, you'll enjoy A History of Britain and learn a lot. I was so happy when my college literature professor asked a question about Mary Wollstonecraft and I was the only person in the sixty-person class to know the answer, which I knew from watching A History of Britain the previous summer. If you're planning a trip to the U.K., you might want to watch these documentaries first, as they'll help you understand the sites you see there and appreciate the British Museum much more. A History of Britain is a great series which succeeds in edification and entertainment. I highly recommend it.Read full review
A well produced, engaging take on British history. Obviously a five DVD set can't cover everything. But what it does cover is interesting and illuminating. Well done.

I had watched parts of this serries on the History Channel and decided that I wanted to have the set for myself. It is a decision that I will never regret. I know that it is impossible to cram over 2000 years of information into 5 DVD's this set does a great job. The narative is wonderful and the visual effects great. Anyone that wants to know how one of the worlds great powers came to be should watch this production.
A good and very interesting work.

OK I will start by admitting that Dad is an Englishman, but this is a very human history of Great Britain which really resonates. Simon Sharma says things about WWII Britain and the aftermath which I have only heard from my father. It is also a history of the very organic and contradictory roots of our own democracy which those that assume democracy can be created by declaring it and holding an election should heed.
