The author's younger sister disappears, and a letter is found in her workplace explaining that if she is missing or dead the police need to look at her live-in boyfriend. This book is the story of the sisters' childhood and how the inappropriate touching by their father and poor boundaries influenced the problems they had as adults with men, sexuality, and romantic relationships. The author doesn't beat you over the head with the message, you have to discern it for yourself, but it is obvious how one thing led to the next resulting in the murder of the younger sister. The author, also, experiences some horrific abusive relationships/marriages. From the book you can see that not all abuse is physical, that emotional abuse is terribly damaging, and that it can escalate. A very sad book about the complexities of domestic violence and how otherwise intelligent women can be drawn into and trapped by it.Read full review
This book should be required reading for adolescent girls! Though the title of the book reflects the murder of the author's sister by her boyfriend, it is also a memoir of the author's history with men: her creepy father, the impact on her own disfunctional relationships, and the ways in which we as women allow men to dominate, abuse, and influence our behavior and choices, even in relationships that others would consider healthy. I saw many of the truths of this book reflected in my own past romantic relationships, as I'm sure most women will. Though often dark in topic, overall the book inspires us to overcome the tendencies to be passive objects in men's monopolization of our lives.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. EVERY WOMAN NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK. WEITHER YOU ARE ABUSED OR NOT, IT WILL TOUCH YOUR HEART. I AM A VERY HARD READER, AND IT NORMALLY TAKES A MONTH FOR ME TO READ A GOOD BOOK.. I READ THIS ONE IN 2 DAYS, AND GAVE IT TO MY MOM TO READ AND SHE LOVES IT TOO.. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERY WOMAN OUT THERE.. GET IT FOR YOUR FRIENDS FOR CHRISTMAS.. THE WAY IT IS WRITTEN, YOU CAN SEE, FEEL, HEAR AND EVEN SMELL ALL THAT IS GOING ON IN THIS BOOK.. BEST I HAVE READ IN YEARS.. HEARD ABOUT THE BOOK ON MONTEL I THINK.. ONE OF THE TALK SHOWS..
I didn't like the book. It seemed like it was more about the sister who was writing it then the sister who was murdered. The ladie who wrote the book created a love story about her marriage then makes it seems like a prison? I didn't understand why show didn't explain more clearly why her father gave her the creeps. then on other topic's she wrote about situations I would never put in writting. Like the one about the older man who touched her while she was sleeping. I would of left that out. I was more interested in the sister who was murdered and there was very little written about that subject. Maybe you will feel differently. I read the whole book and then wanted to throw it againest the wall. This book made me feel frustrated!
I recently heard Janine Latus speak and found her quite engaging. I was initially surprised that her book spoke so much about herself rather than her sister. I soon realized though that she was explaining how the girls in her family were sexualized by their father and how this crept into their relationships with men. I do think though that she should have spent more time on her sister than on herself. Who cares how big her breast implants were or how many she had?
