Bought this on cd as have it on white vinyl from it's original release - but have had no record player for years and wanted to listen to it. Forgot how good it was, probably appreciate it that little bit more now being slightly older, wiser, hairier and smaller (your skellington shrinks as you get older doesnt it?). Anyway, for me, this and the first album 'Expecting to fly' are the best work the bluetones ever produced. Both equally as much a work of genius as the other, well produced, well crafted songs with lyrics to boot. Science and nature onwards things seemed to change, and although i love all the albums (especially a new athens - prob my 3rd fave) i dont think they stand up to the first 2. As a teenager i used to listen to Expecting to fly through headphones after a few beers and a smoke - i would listen to Last chance saloon when getting ready to go out on the lash. Listening to it now makes me want to get my best clothes on, get drunk and leer over pretty girls in sticky floored nightclubs like i used to back then, however common sense, personal pride, a wife, a dog, wrinkles and maturity forbid such behaviour. I once told some girls when out with a pal of mine that he thought the bluetones were actually called the bluet ones until i corrected him. They laughed and wouldnt beleive him when he tried to set things straight. It became a standing joke between all my mates, here comes the buet one. He will never escape it. This is not so much a review as it is me rambling on about what i used to get up to when the album came out isnt it. So its probably not helpful at all. Sorry, and... erm, see ya the morn tinsel titz!Read full review
I had been looking for this album for a while for one song in particular "Solomon bites the worm" which I had heard on the Channel 4 comedy "Teachers" and loved. The CD is a mix of funky upbeat songs with an indie feel and some slightly darker and slower numbers. I had never listened to any of the other songs on the CD before but it has been in my car CD changer for a while and get listened to frequently. would appeal most to fans of 80s indie.
I'm a big Bluetones fan and so this review of course will be biased in that direction. However, a really well written album. A band that can diversify but always maintain their independant style. Expecting to Fly was a brilliant album and here you can hear the band growing musically. A must.
If you like Indie you'll love the Bluetones. They have a few albums released but i would recommend you start with this one - its classic bluetones and really fantastic. A must for the IPOD.
