A massive plague has hit Earth and with almost no exception, all mammals with the Y chromosome have died in a horrific manner. The only exceptions appear to be Yorick and his monkey Ampersand. Along with cloning expert Dr. Allison Mann and government agent 355, Yorick and Ampersand are traveling to San Francisco to Dr. Mann’s second lab. They start out in Colorado and when the story ends, they are in Arizona and facing a significant roadblock controlled by some very well-armed women. While in Colorado, they meet with fellow agent 711 and she is placed in charge of Yorick while Dr. Mann and 355 track down some antibiotics for Ampersand. It is here where the reader is introduced to some of the trauma of Yorick’s childhood and given a partial explanation of his behavior. It is a bizarre form of treatment that seems to work to some extent. Yet even that ends poorly. For reasons that make no sense given their previous experience, Dr. Mann decides to go solo, somehow believing that she can reason with the ruthless women that control the roadblock on the interstate. In keeping with the previous stories, when the reader is given a teaser of hope regarding the survival of humanity, it is at least partially dashed. Strange characters and a reference to a mystic amulet that may have protected Yorick add additional levels of thought to the developing story. One of the best stories ever to appear in serialized comic form. This is a great and original story, even though it is based on one of the most heavily used premises of a massive death in the human population. Read full review
