These days most people (if they know him at all) recognize General Scott as the man who designed the Civil War “Anaconda” battle plan in the early days of the war. Mr. Eisenhower aims to show us what a critical leader Scott was in the 50 years preceding that, serving from the War of 1812 on as a general officer. The book is well written, amusing at times, and definitely written at a laymen’s knowledge level of the military and American History. I have read this twice and recommend it to students of America, the military, and politics. This is worth your time and money.
John Eisenhower takes a general now little remembered by the people and shows what a valuable contribution he made to our early republic even with his all too human flaws and foibles. Also I think Eisenhower rescues from the dust heap of history Scott's genuine skills as an Army officer. It makes you wonder if he hadn't been so old and physically feeble at the beginning of the Civil War, how different a war it would have been as prosecuted by a younger Scott. Even in his condition he laid the general framework for a gradual blockade and slow strangulation of the South's capabilities with his "Anaconda Plan". You owe it to yourself to learn about Winfield Scott.
