Entertaining and educational, a vivid and accurate period portrayal. The two principal characters weave their way in and out of events leading up to the battle of the Alamo and culminating in the final defeat and capture of Santa Anna's army, with interesting anecdotal scenes involving Jim Bowey and Sam Houston. Burke has obviously done a tremendous amount of research on the topic, locations, characters and social mores of the time. I balked a bit at the profusely gratuitous profanity of Hugh Allison, though his character was otherwise expertly drawn and the main source of historically authentic information and detail. The novel provides an indelible portrait of a critical period of American history, with all its grit, grime and glory.
There isn't a James Lee Burke novel that I HAVEN'T enjoyed....he's an excellent writer, and you can't help but get involved with his wonderful characters. The stories are compelling, they're ADDICTING to read, and I've read every single one I could get my hands on...with joy! If you want a writer whose stories are excellent....JLB is your answer!!
