Fourteen year old Carrie and her young brother Nick are sent to Wales as part of a WWII evacuation from London. They are assigned to live with shopkeeper Mr. Evans and his timid, spinster sister Lou. Lou loves to lavish attention on the children but Mr. Evan's remains cold at all times. One day the children are sent to fetch a Christmas goose from mysterious Druid's Bottom. Magical adventures soon happen. Although this PBS Masterpiece Theater movie is somewhat similar in story to "The Chronicles of Narnia," it is not quite the same. Children will like viewing Nina Bawden's novel as a movie because of the magic and heartfelt content. C.S. Lewis it isn't.
Have seen this film several times. It is an engaging, well-acted film. Highly recommend.
