this is an excellent study guide and should be read, first, by all bible readers. in it you find all the need information on how to interpret scripture. although at times you will find that you already have most of the tools needed; like common sense, which is compared to exegesis in this book. there is no need to buy anything else but what the author suggest. your level of exegesis will be upgrade with this tool along with all of your other interpreting skills. you will love it and all of the knowledge of the bible it helps you to understand. this is the second edition and is basically no different than edition 1 and 3. the most updated is volume three which is a benefit to young teens and anyone who does not use the K.J.V. that much (an update from volume 2) chapter 2 in edition 3 has changed also. 3 also says it will probably make room for a 4th edition. so no need to buy them all, but if you can not find 3 then get 2, if not 2 then get 1; for they all are good. while buying an older one do not bend the bind or write in your book, because if you upgrade you can sell it on e-bay. that is how i got this one, used on e-bay. its a wonderful, wonderful book.Read full review
As a person who is reading the Bible for the first time, this gives very strong advice that I never realized was needed! Chapter 2 helps you determine which Bible is right for you, pros and cons of each bible without saying one bible is more right than another. Seriously, a "need to read." This book was written decades ago, but it still holds true to today!

As a former seminary student, pastor, and current foreign missionary for well over a decade, I whole-heartedly recommend this book as a MUST READ for anyone who has been called by God to "rightly divide the Word of Truth" (2 Tim. 2:15). This book will open your eyes to those areas of Scripture that we bring our own culture into when understanding it (yes, me too!), and then will force you to ask the question, "Can a section of Scripture mean something completely different than what it originally meant when it was written? Very easy to read, and VERY convicting!
Fee is not only one of the smartest individuals that I've ever read, he's an EXPERT on Bible study! However, that doesn't stop this book from being extremely understandable, even for the beginner. Stuart and Fee outline patterns for studying the literary styles of the Bible, and make incredible observations about cited passages - so much so, it spurs you on to study yourself. I've not only read this book, but I've taught it in the classroom, and every student comes away with the same comment - I don't know how I ever read the Bible before thinking like this! Extremely helpful - absolutely the best on the market for the target audience. There's a reason why this is already among the classics of the genre!
