I Now Know WHO this man, George Washington, really was. AMAZING book!!! A Favorite and a Keeper. Inspiring, interesting, great reading, enlightening, powerful- I could not put it down. So well written, not just a history of the man and his time. This is a trip into his depth of his character, his abilities to lead, inspire, promote courage, move mountains, think clearly in total chaos, never stop, keep pushing forward, country first- more information than I expected. A fantastic read!

This is a great book. A complete review of George Washington's life and times and why our country simply wouldn't exist without his leadership. He was a unique and extraordinary man who led all others of his time. The first world famous person? If you read about other founders, this book offers a great perspective on his relationships with them (Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams and others). Also great insight into his personality. The focus of this book is more on his life as president. If you prefer military focus, I'd suggest reading Delaware Crossing, also a good book. Both books paint Washington in an (appropriately) positive light, and give perspective on those who may not.
I bought this book for my Dad who is a big history buff, but I decided that I would read it before I gave it to him. Ellis has done his homework and puts great personal insight into Washington's life and decisions. I was really surprised at how much I did not know about the first President of The United States-as well as the things I had heard that were not true. It was truly fascinating-worth reading at least once. If you have been to the areas that he lived and fought it is even more worth it.
George Washington was a much more complex character than we were led to believe in high school. This excellent biography reveals the man as he was, warts and all! It illustrates his increasing frustration with the British government and their completely unrealistic plans for the land west of the Allegheny mountains. Washington's early failures in both his military and his domestic affairs are brought to life and explain his future success....as in "if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again!"
