I have lately become more interested in the life of R.E. Lee, and have read, or are reading several books on his life. This volume is interesting in that while the author repeats other authors with singing Lee's praises as far as his character, upbringing, intelligence are all on board with everyone else, He very claearly states that Lee insisted on fighting offensive, rather than the defensive kind of tactics that J. Davis and T.J. Jackson felt would win the war. They tought that all they had to do was wear the Union down, and wait for the North to let the south departg in peace. The author states that if Lee had stayed on defensive, the war might have turned out differently. An interesting read!
