Tim Burton pays homage to all of his favorite horror films. Tim Burton’s animated horror-comedy Frankenweenie (2012) is a passion project of love, in which he gets to pay tribute to all of his beloved childhood favorites. Burton gets a chance to remake his famous short film, also entitled Frankenweenie, with adorable results. The stop-motion is impressive with care given to the smallest detail. Hair blows in the wind, fur brushes aside when petted, eyelids are expressive and realistic, and movements are perfectly exaggerated to fit each quaint character design. Everyone looks like a past Burton character or a classic movie monster. Burton’s black and white direction and lighting is honestly gorgeous. Frankenweenie features brightly lit, clean shots all filmed in black and white to allude back to an older era in America. Tim Burton is returning to his childhood and past work here, so the color scheme is appropriate. His use of shaded shots is striking with the pale white characters shining brightest among Burton’s dark imagery. Tim Burton was born to make films for Goth fans with his unique pale characters and iconic style. Danny Elfman’s haunting score is sublime as he envelops you with his whimsical fantasy music. He brings the darkness of horror films into a childlike wonder sonic sphere for your listening pleasure. Voice casts can redefine your film and Frankenweenie is no exception. Winona Ryder brings her natural Goth charm to Elsa Van Helsing’s shy and lonely heroine. Martin Landau is fearsome and hilarious as the science teacher Mr. Rzykruski. Catherine O’Hara is charming and polite as Mrs. Frankenstein, who is the supportive mother to Victor Frankenstein. O’Hara pulls off an ethereal haunting voice for the adorable Weird Girl as well as a husky voice for the gym teacher. Martin Short is stern, yet loving as Mr. Frankenstein. He also voices the mean Mr. Burgemeister and Nassor. Atticus Shaffer does a fantastic Egor impression as Edgar “E” Gore. Last, but not least, Charlie Tahan is emotive and spectral as the lead Victor Frankenstein. In all, Frankenweenie is one of Burton’s best movies as it is cute in concept, clever in execution, stunningly shot, and wonderfully voiced. It’s got an adorable dog named Sparky, who I’m sure all audience will love.Read full review
