I bought series 2, after viewing series one. I had caught parts of the series one summer on PBS, but had not seen all of it. Unlike most people, I own very few TV series or movies on DVD or VHS. So for me to "invest" in this, means more than you may think. (I loved series one and series two is as good or better.) I decided to buy number one and two, because I'd like to share it with my whole (extended) family. In checking (at this time) series 2 does not seem to be rentable from Netflix or Blockbuster. But much of the BBC series is now available. Monarch of the Glen is a beautiful program which manages to combine romance, witty comedy and drama, with a beautiful backdrop of a Scottish Loch and the Scottish Highlands. While the amazing scenery is both magical and impressive, it's the characters which carry this show. Not only are the actors are all fantastic, but it appeals to the whole family. The storylines are great; with many twists and turns. This is just the best program on television, pure blissful escapism, much hilarity, intermingled with a long ago family tragedy that affected everyone. Beautiful scenery and the great characters; drama, romance and comedy in bucketfuls! Unlike most prgrams you watch on TV, you can't wait for the next installment or new section of the series. (WARNING -IT'S ADDICTING!) In season 2, Archie is fully in-charge, with his new position as "Laird" and is doing everything he can, to help the family estate, make income. Even his father Hector (ever the hindrance) has actually tried to help from time to time. The 'will they or won't they' romance between Archie and Katrina started in series I, picks up steam. The characters in this series, are all exceptional in my mind. There is so much humor and love in the series. The father and mother (Hector and Mollie) are terrific actors and portray such warm, quirky characters. Archie, the son and new Laird of Glen Bogle is intelligent, good-hearted, but often confused by his women friends, and is clearly frustrated in his attempts to get the family estate (Glen Bogle) back on its feet. Archie must slowly find his way (both for the path of his life and the estate) through numerous obstacles and problems. The supporting cast is made up of Golly (groundskeeper), Duncan (who does all odd jobs around the castle), Lexie (the cook, housekeeper, resident flirt) and Katrina, old friend and who NOW, has an opportunity to renew (and perhaps) change her relationship (with Archie) from friend to girl friend (there are sparks) and Justine, Archie's demanding fiance and his restaurant's co-owner (trying to remain in London) Laird Kilwillie his parents' neighbor, friend, and sometimes foe (there are a few feuds) - they are all characters you fall in love with. Archie has his hands full and overflowing, both trying to get the estate out of its debts and finding ways to make it self-sustaining, and keeping a firm hand on his father's quirky costly schemes, and his gentle mother's follies. I can't think of anything bad about this, except to suggest you don't start watching it, if you have anywhere you need to be. Wonderful series for when "regular TV" goes into reruns, or you'd like good TV to watch while on vacation, with Lord knows what, actually available to view. Totally safe viewing AND enjoyable, for the ENTIRE family. If you are buying online, be SURE you get a series as viewable in the US. You need tract or district one DVDs.Read full review
Monarch of the Glen may be my favorite BBC series of all time! The characters are well written, the scenes of Scotland are breathtaking, the dialogue witty and the stories entertaining and enjoyable. Series two does not disappoint. With Archie accepting his role as Laird of Glenbogle, the stories become more intriguing. The supporting characters are developed more completely (Golly, Lexie, and Duncan in particular.) If you have watched series one, you must continue the story with series two!
Love the scenery, development of main characters, and wardrobes. At season 3, episode 9, I actually swooned..which at age 70 made me feel 50 years younger....nice feeling.

The scenery in this is absolutely gorgeous, and the acting is first rate. The story lines and plots in the second series are not quite as good as the first series, but the series is still highly entertaining but not deep or overly dramatic. Love the old laird!
