This is one of the timeless animated classics that was probably never truly marketed well enough for it to get critical acclaim but it's definitely one of my favorites along somewhat obscure animated films like Rock-N-Rule and Fire & Ice. It's a great adventure film that has just enough adult subtext to keep mom and dad interested but mild enough for the kids. Although this is probably a more fitting story for a 12-year old boy than a 5-year old girl. I think it goes without saying that the film borrows heavily from Star Wars but is individual enough to stand on its own as it gleans from other movie staples such as fish-out-of-water, world domination, vengeance, redemption as well as foreshadowing current films like The Matrix and Surrogates in being controlled by computers and machines. Dag is the obligatory thief with a heart of gold with traces of Han Solo but it's Arthur, his talking ship, that really adds something to the storytelling. A somewhat Jarvis-like character (the talking computer in the Iron Man movies). Overall, this is a very great film and by my estimation a classic in 80's animation. I'm giving it 5-stars not because I think it's the greatest animated film in the world but it holds it's own against other films that tried to be somewhat serious space adventures like Titan: A.E. that was good but had way too many silly things happening to keep babies interested. Starchaser has its share of dark moments and it's important to keep up with the story (especially the scene in Avyana's library) if you want to really understand the main villain's motivation and history.Read full review
this movie seems to want to contradict itself in numerous place and even though the art and animation is done by the same crew that did Heavy Metal it's still shotty and flawed. So you're thinking that this is a bad review...but it's not. I love this movie. For every weak plot point there's a scene of sheer coolness to counteract it. Arthur, the ships computer, maybe be a little overly effeminate, but Dag deBremi adds the much needed color to a lot of the scenes. For anyone that saw this in the theater in it's original 3-D release this might not be exactly what you remember but it's still very satisfying. If you didn't see it about twenty years ago, don't worry about, buy it anyways. It's just a fun trip. Just don't think about it too much.

this movie is a non disney classic that was fun for all ages. i had this movie on vhs and am pleased to include it into my dvd collection. it is a basic tale of man verses machine but told in an exciting way. it predates titan ae that may have been a better looking movie but lacked in story, starchaser should be in any sci/fi collectors collection. if you have never seen or heard of this movie i advise getting it to watch if only to see if it is as good as i claim. animated movies are mostly clasified as cartoon or childrens this is true with most movies like this one but what ever is wrong with a good animated movie that equals live action movies.
I can remember as a kid going to the theater to see this movie. I couldn't remember the name for years, just that there was a sword hilt with no blade, and when angry, the hilt did nothing. It's a great movie about the power of positive thinking and good intentions. Some have said this movie is a copy of Star Wars, and yes, there are many similarities. After 23 years I was still just as excited to watch this one as I was the first time. I recommend it to all.
