This novel, sequel to the arresting romance-mystery Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, has a lot to live up to: a best seller, a plot so fascinating another film of Rebecca is contemplated 75 years and countless tv and movie versions later, reading the novel was like reading a movie script. To write this sequel must have been daunting to the author. Sadly, to read it was daunting. Gone were the details of fascinating settings; gone were the 3-dimensional characters of Maxim De Winter, his wife number two, and Mrs. Danvers; gone were the twists and turns of a suspenseful plot that one could always find in a Du Maurier novel. It made me wonder, did the author ever read Du Maurier's Rebecca? Because her sequel is a ho-hum novel at best, not worthy of being called a sequel to the superb Rebecca.Read full review
