This book has taught me more about the " war for southern independence " than I ever would have imagined. I hold a Ba in American History and have about 1/2 of an MA in American history ( both from New York colleges ) It was NOT a civil war. The south did not want to control Washington a civil war is when two factions vie for control of one objective. War crimes committed by The American military against CIVILIAN populations is glossed over in standard texts. This is NOT collateral damage this was a planned destruction of the Civilian population in Sherman's march to the sea. Facts like Grant owned slaves, Lee was opposed to slavery jump at the reader. This book has changed my opinion completely about the period. I always held Lincoln in high esteem. My eyes are now open to my complete ignorance about his diabolical nature. The facts are too many to enunciate here all I can say is " READ THIS BOOK "Read full review

This book is great for modern political thinkers but not so great for those that want to promote revisionist history. It gets a little bogged down sometimes but the content will get any southerner a little worked up. The sections on how Lincoln was in essence a military dictator who would not hesitate to jail people for dissent or close newspapers was very interesting. This part of civil war history is not touched on very much in other books. I particularly liked the thread of thought within the book that explains how the north left the south drained, destroyed, and raped. It is common knowledge that even now the U.S. uses primarily southern troops as cannon fodder for their expansionist wars across the globe. We have also known for some time that blacks owned slaves and that there were freemen in the south and also in the Confederate Army and Navy. Some parts of the book get bogged down a little in personal letters that tend to repeat that even some of the slaves were aghast at the behavior of marauding, raping, pillaging, thieving, murderous northern troops. The book also touches on how the north could not have survived without the south's warm water ports, and the way the north has taxed the south into submission for the last 141 years. This book describes how even Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia were eventually allowed to break away from Russia, and that the south should be allowed self determination. You will get a chill when the author begins to describe some things that could be different under an autonomous CSA. One thing which is a little scary the author mentioned that people on public assistance probably would not be allowed to vote. Also people that had declared bankruptcy would probably not be allowed to vote. Reading and writing English would also be a requirement. Still this is a thought provoking and brave book. Good reading!Read full review
After moving to the South a few years ago, long after having gotten my education in northern schools, and being a history buff, I got "The South Was Right!" as part of an ongoing investigation into the history of the war of many names; The War for Southern Independance, The War of Northern Agression, The Civil War, War of the Rebellion; take your pick. I found the Kennedy brothers' book to be a very readable, well researched and documented presentation of the events leading up to the war, the legitimacy of secession and the ramifications to our nation as a whole, not just the South, that we live with even today, as a result of the war's outcome. I found it facinating and convincing that indeed, "The South Was Right!." And for the record, I am not related to the authors in any way and have never met them, though I would like to. They have written a book that should be required reading in every school in America. The current curriculum in honest history is sadly lacking. Indeed I can recommend it to all who would know how we got to where we are today.Read full review

I have really enjoyed reading this book. I particularly found it interested to read about "reconstruction" and how many rights were taken from the Southern people and then the rest of the country. I also appreciated learning that our whole country was responsible for the institution of slavery, not just the South. Also, I was glad to read that the authors were in agreement that it was a good thing to rid our country of slavery. There was so much information in The South Was Right that I have never been exposed too. As a Southerner I am encouraged to know the perspective of my ancestors. As a homeschool Mom I will make this required reading for high school! Along with the Constitution.
