I brought this book because I'm interested in Japanese warfare, this battle amazed me, its not well known fight but it should be! I like this book because the Man who wrote it R. Sherwood was in amongst it, he wasn't a marine but a reporter. His detailed story was more descriptive than the 4 other books on Tarawa I have read. He explains the horror the marines faced wading into shore under heavy fire ranging from light through to heavy MG, mortars and artillery. Overall this book educated me and gave me a better understanding of the Japanese defences which the marines faced, not only that the spirit of the Japanese soldiers when facing what the US Armada threw at them in this battle, from battle ships to aircraft to Tanks and flame throwers and lastly the grunt on the ground. Its a good read.Read full review
A wonderful book on a subject that is very ugly. Every eighth grader in the United States should read this book. Freedom comes at a tremendous cost of human life.
