This book is a great introduction into the history of middle earth, making it very clear upon first reading that this is a history of the creation of middle earth- not of middle earth itself. The process that Tolkien had was compelling and entertaining. I will say that his reuse of names in some place can make the facts a bit confusing, but the progression is astounding. Commentary by the lovely Christopher Tolkien helps sort out what parts of the mythology remained and what was changed and likely why. Recommend this for any hardcore Tolkien fans. Only downside was this copy of the book had incredibly weathered and yellowed pages. Still, the words were all legible and it was a step up from the mmpb copy I had before this!
