It is difficult to capture the sense of destiny enmeshed in a global phenomena such as the California gold rush. As far as snapshots go, The World Rushed In, served to catch a fleeting ambrotype of a handful of players from the lowly to the loftiest. Nevertheless, its only failing served to provide only a shadowy taste for further inquiry for those wishing to delve into the visceral experience of Manifest Destiny. As a vignette, however, the book affords the reader an complete historical overview of the passions and political policies affecting early California. That said, the book is a must-read for serious scholars of 19th Century American history.
